The best solutions from sci-fi 1.0
Oh, how many times have you been in traffic and dreamed of a flying car?
Have you ever Been waiting for a delayed plane and wished for a Transporter?
I am a believer that those who create sci-fi are charged with the task of bending reality just enough to creatively solve some of life’s biggest problems. Traveling the galaxy would take generations normally, therefore Light Speed is created. Hunger still plagues most of the planet, so Star Trek comes up with replicators. And George Lucus’ neck was getting fatter by the day making it more difficult to reach his Milk Duds, ergo The Force!
I’ve sought the help of many of you for this post. There are so many different technologies or environmental truths created in these stories we love oh so much.
However, after discussing it with others who have embraced the nerd and pondering it myself, I’ve come up with a few creative solutions that really shine through as the best from sci-fi.
Here’s the first post of many with this theme:
The only way to travel through Space :: Battlestar’s FTL Drives
The first technology comes from the Battlestar Galactica Universe. This universe has many awesome inventions, hexagonal paper is definitely not the least of these.
However, one of the most prominent technologies is called a Faster Than Light drive to jump around the universe, avoiding Cylons, and looking for Earth… sorry to disappoint guys… unless you live in a Nordic country, Earth isn’t exactly the Utopia you hoped for. However, if you do live in a Nordic country, enjoy!
“Faster that light” drives are in my opinion the BEST solution to space travel. I chose this propulsion system over Light Speed, Warp Speed, or even Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine. The concept is the same as explained in the creepy Sci-fi thriller “Event Horizon”. It bends space allowing a ship to jump instantly light years away. As Dark Helmet stated, “Lightspeed too slow!” FTL Drives would be to space travel, like gun shots are to killing things.
Pluto? BAM! We’re THERE!
“WAIT! Why Pluto? It isn’t even a planet Trevor!!!”
“Whatever, it didn’t stop Starbucks from setting up shop and I need to use a clean bathroom!”
Many different sci-fi universes use this type of technology. However, the BSG FTL is by far the most stable… and awesome.
What’s your take on FTL? Should we have lightspeed? Warp Speed? Thoughts?
